Fishing
Galway offers the cleanest waters and environment possible for the sportsperson, and is renowned for its quality of game, coarse and sea fishing.
River Angling: The Western Fisheries Region
The Corrib system, with its streams, loughs and rivers (such as the Clare River) is considered one of Europe's finest fisheries.
It is especially renowned for its brown trout, although Salmon, Pike, Bream and Roach are also abundant. Fish taken from the Clare River in recent times have weighing in at over 7lb and 8lb - enough to make any fisherman proud!
Sea Angling: Shore & Deep Sea
Shore angling mainly comprises mackerel and pollack from mid August to end of September. Most shore fishing takes place along the promenade away from bathing areas. Rocky promontories can produce Bass and Wrasse. Shore angling is free.
Galway Bay provides some fine deep sea fishing with porbeagle, congor and blue shark in abundance. There are also some fine specimens of pollack, cod and ling.
